The holiday season took a turn for some as Costco eggs were recalled due to a potential salmonella risk. The contaminated eggs come from New York's Handsome Brook Farms and have been classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Class I recall, a step indicating that there is "reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death," according to an announcement seen on NBC New York . Initially reported on November 27, the recall has now extended to roughly 10,800 units of 24-count eggs under the Kirkland Signature brand.

These eggs have been distributed across Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. In the wake of the update, Handsome Brook Farms confirmed on its website that eggs not meant for retail distribution were mistakenly packaged and distributed in retail packaging. As per an update from the FDA, the eggs' origin environment had tested positive for Salmonella before making their way to stores.

Salmonella, as recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. These symptoms typically appear between six hours and six days after exposure and can last up to a week. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall so far, but these infections can pose a greater risk to vulnerable populations, including young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

The specific identifier for the recalled product is a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 9661910680, marked with Julian code 327 and a use-by date of January 5, 2025. Consumers who may still have these items, are advised to either return them to their nearest Costco for a full refund or discard them safely. According to a statement by the CDC cited on SILive , "Customers who have the recalled eggs should return them to their local Costco for a full refund or throw them away," further solidifying the recourse for those affected.
