Coronation Street icon Sue Devaney has opened up about her character Debbie's heartbreaking dementia storyline - and the one request she's made to producer Kate Brooks

Coronation Street star Sue Devaney has addressed her exit from the ITV soap in a chat with This Morning , revealing that she's made one request around the upcoming dementia storyline. Sue is best known for playing Debbie Webster on the cobbles - however, her story is set to come to an end as the character receives a dementia diagnosis. Speaking to presenters Sian Welby and Dermot O'Leary, Sue said that she told producer Kate Brooks that she didn't want to know how Debbie's story ends.

"I don't want to know what's coming up, I just want to get the scripts just because it is so long, I'd rather just know when I'm filming it," she said. Sue added that she feels "mixed emotions" about her new storyline and how that will change everything for Debbie. "When you've got a storyline like dementia, you know that that character is going to change," she said.

"It was a lot to take on but it's a fantastic story and it's an important story to tell." Last week, Sue broke her silence on her exit news, revealing that she shared initial "concerns" about Debbie's fate . "Kate called me into the office and she said we've got this brilliant story, and we want to give Debbie dementia," she said.

"And obviously, down the line, you don't survive dementia. So I knew that the story would eventually come to an end and my character would come to an end. There was a mixture of a lot of things.

" Sue added that it was going to be difficult to say goodbye to Coronation Street , which was her first job when she was 16. "I left after a year and now it will be coming to an end again. But I also realised this was a really important story to tell and is a really fantastic opportunity to act," she said.

While there were rumours that Sue was "furious" over her exit news, the Corrie star revealed that those claims were "completely untrue". She added: "The only reason I was concerned about the storyline was because I wanted to be sure I could do it justice." In an exclusive chat with The Mirror , Sue revealed that she has personal experience of dementia , having helped look after her father-in-law, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s seven years ago.

“He’s 90 and we’ve spent the past four years trying to sort out his care and finances,” Sue said. “At time, it was very hard and his behaviour could be erratic. Things have settled down now and he has round-the-clock care.
