A Coronation Street star has hit out after bosses at the ITV soap axed a personal storyline – despite months of work. Colson Smith who plays Craig Tinker on the Manchester-based soap has taken to social media to reveal his experience on the ITV programme. The actor, 26, has been extremely open with his fans about his staggering 11-stone weight loss in recent years after admitting he "had to" do something.
Nowadays, Colson can often be found out running in Manchester and trains in set ways to ensure maximum gains from his work outs. He revealed that he once weighed 24 stone and asked bosses at Coronation Street if he could find a way to intertwine his weight loss into his character. However, coronavirus hit the UK, with the soap going into lockdown as the nation battled to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus.
Taking to TikTok, Colson revealed he was on "dodgy ground" before focusing on a massive shift in his health. Colson went on to say: "I didn't realise how big I was. "I was 24 stone before covid and I was so unhealthy, but I had a bizarre relationship with food where I would do a restrictive eating cycle and I would eat s**t loads of food and hate myself for it, so then I would punish myself by not eating, and then I would get so hungry and emotional that I would binge eat again.
"I went like that for about a year, and I had a thought about how we could play the story with Craig so that he would have an eating disorder linked to his OCD, which was slightly close to home, but I think it is important that stuff like this is told on TV." He said he went to bosses on the soap and told them: "I can tell you now that I can do it." "They were for it, but Covid-19 happened, so we kiboshed the story," he told his online followers.
But he soon realised that despite the intensity of the lockdown period and not leaving the house, it would work well for him. Colson shed a huge amount of weight and reached 13 stone having taken up running. He continued: "I told myself now is the time to start running - there was no excuses to put it off.
I hated it at first, and then one day, I was out on the run, and I was talking to myself, and I said, I'm a runner. It kind of just happened, but it had to happen as I was so unhealthy, and losing weight is properly addictive. "I just got into it, and literally the weight dropped off! I dropped from 138kg to 84kg in less than a year.
" Colson credits himself for his discipline, healthy eating and running as he had no access to a gym during the lockdown periods. "I do not regret it and now I fear that if I don't run, I'll get big again," he said in a candid revelation. Just last month, the actor ran his first marathon.
