BALIK PULAU: Police detained four people, including a couple and two foreigners, believed to be involved in a drug trafficking syndicate here yesterday.The couple, a housewife and a trader, are believed to have obtained the drugs from the foreigners before selling them.Southwest district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam said police first detained the couple, a 38-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man, in Kampung Permatang Damar Laut yesterday morning.
No drugs were found on them.He said that in a follow-up operation hours later, police arrested a 25-year-old Myanmar man and a 30-year-old Bangladeshi man at a house in Lengkok Pemancar, Gelugor.Police also seized 17 compressed blocks of ganja, weighing 12,834.
80g and worth RM38,493, during the arrest of the foreigners.The drugs seized could potentially be distributed to 25,668 users."The couple are believed to have bought the drugs from the foreigners before repacking and selling them.
"They are believed to have bought one kilogramme of drugs from the foreigners for RM1,200 before selling them for RM3,000," he told reporters here today.Sazalee said three of the four people arrested tested positive for drugs, except for the Myanmar man. He said only the couple had previous records related to drug offences.
Sazalee said investigations showed that the couple had been actively distributing drugs since early this year in the Bayan Lepas and Gelugor areas.He added that police also seized two motorcycles and a car, with a total estimated value of RM13,500.The Myanmar man has reportedly been living in Malaysia for approximately 10 years, while the Bangladeshi man has been in the country for about five years.
Both individuals have valid travel documents.All four have been remanded for seven days starting today for further investigation.The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and if convicted, the offenders may face the death penalty or life imprisonment, upon conviction.
