T'puram: A civil police officer (CPO) from Karamana police station was grievously injured after he was stabbed with a knife by members of a drug mafia on Thursday night at Killipalam over a previous enmity. This is the sixth attack against cops while on duty in the city this year. Police arrested three youths over the incident, and the officer, Jayachandran C, 39, is undergoing treatment at medical college hospital with injuries to his stomach, palm and thighs.

The CPO was attacked during an inspection conducted near Theemankari behind PRS Hospital as part of Operation D-Hunt to curb the flow of drugs into the city. Seeing the officer in the locality, the accused took out a knife, saying they were waiting for an opportunity to take revenge for being arrested earlier in connection with a drug case registered under the NDPS Act. After verbally abusing him, the accused stabbed the officer in his stomach.

Later, he was stabbed in the chest, but it pierced through his palm when he tried blocking the attack and in the third attempt, he was stabbed in both thighs. When other cops reached the spot, the accused escaped, but they were nabbed hours later near the locality. The arrested men have been identified as Jithin, 24, of Melancode; Rajeesh, 26, alias Kuttan, of Karamana and Lijo, 28, of Manacaud.

They were remanded on charges under BNS Sections 296 (b) for abusing, 109 for attempted murder, and 121 (2) for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a public servant to prevent him/her from discharging duty. They were accused in several NDPS cases before and police team reached the locality on the basis of a tip-off that the accused were engaged in a drug deal..
