Along with a special additional excise duty (SAED) of Rs 2 on petrol and diesel, the Government of India has increased rates for liquid petroleum gas (LPG) by Rs 50. The hike is across all categories, including the subsidized users, who are poor families under the Ujjwala scheme. The fifty-rupee hike is to compensate OMCs (oil marketing companies) for their bleeding loss of Rs 41,338 crore in FY25.
The Oil Ministry is seeking the cabinet's approval of Rs 32,000 crores to compensate for the loss suffered by the state-run OMCs, including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL), and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.
(IOC). These OMCs will scoop Rs 9000 crore off the Rs 2 SAED on petrol and diesel. From Rs 19.
9 in April 2025, the excise duty is now hiked to Rs 21.9 for petrol. For diesel, the excise duty is now Rs 17.
