Cook County Republican Party Chairman Sean Morrison announced Saturday that he would be stepping down from his post this month. The Cook County Board member said “this is not a new decision” as over the last year he’s had “numerous conversations” with people close to him and had planned to step down after the 2024 general election and last week’s consolidated elections. His resignation is effective April 14.
“It has been one of the great honors of my life to serve in this capacity. I’ve had the privilege to work with so many hardworking, community-centric individuals who embody the spirit and strength of our party,” Morrison said in a letter to members of the Cook County Republican Party. “I am grateful for the support, dedication, and perseverance shown by so many along the way.
” Morrison was appointed Cook County Commissioner representing the 17th District in 2015 and was elected as Cook County GOP chair in 2016. He was elected to his first full term as commissioner in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. In his letter, Morrison said it was “time for new energy” in the party.
“The future of our party depends on fresh, motivated, and hardworking members to step up and carry the baton forward,” he said. “I am confident that the next generation of Republican leaders is ready to answer the call.” But Morrison said he wasn’t completely stepping away.
He will continue to serve as the Palos Township Republican committeeman and plans to complete his term on the Illinois Republican State Central Committee. Morrison called for an election to choose the next Cook County GOP chair on April 22 “to ensure a smooth and transparent transition.” Palatine Township Republicans Committeeman Aaron Del Mar, who served as Cook County GOP chair from 2012-2016, said he has the support to win the election and seeks to complete the final year of Morrison’s term.
