Many people use oil when cooking bacon; however, it’s not the healthiest and can cause quite a greasy mess on your hob. To replace oil, there is something more simple to use - water. On her TikTok page, @cravingsbychrissyteigen shared how she makes “extra crispy bacon” with just water.
Chrissy captioned the video: “Extra crispy bacon hack: cook in water. Yes, you read that correctly.” The use of water is effective as it keeps the initial cooking temperature low and gentle, so the bacon retains its moisture and stays tender as the fat renders.
What’s more, since the water helps render the fat, you’ll guarantee fewer splatters as the bacon cooks. By the time the water reaches its boiling point, the bacon fat is almost completly rendered. This will help keep the meat from burning.
For this method, you want to start off with a cold pan and add your bacon slices. Make sure to spread them out so they have room to cook. Next, pour in just enough water to cover the bacon.
Be careful not to go overboard with the water, or you will have to wait a long time for the bacon to cook. Then, you want to turn up the heat to high - until the water starts bubbling - before reducing it to a low heat. Chrissy highlighted that “patience is key” when it comes to cooking bacon this way, as you need to allow the water to evaporate.
Give the bacon a gentle flip and continue cooking until it reaches a “deep golden brown shade and extra crispy results”. Chef Andy Cook also recommends cooking bacon with water over oil. He said: “I’ve been cooking bacon in water for quite a few years now.
“I didn't realise it wasn’t a common thing until I started posting it on TikTok and got a lot of curious comments. It’s very common in a chef’s home kitchen.” Andy noted that this bacon cooking tip takes two minutes to prepare and 20 minutes to cook.
