As we come to the start of a new year, lots of us are frantically buying items for the holiday season, stocking up on "must haves" for visits from the relos and juggling the to-do list that we meant to have sorted months ago. Login or signup to continue reading As we ponder how to stretch the dollar further in what has financially been a tough year for many, it got me thinking about the impact of our spending.
With so many options available to us, given the limited dollars we have, the concept of conscious consumerism, or better explained as "buying goods for good" has seen people actively choosing to spend with organisations that authentically support their beliefs and values. Here in the Illawarra, we see a growing consideration for shoppers seeking to purchase from social enterprises and "for purpose" businesses that give an added benefit with every transaction. At the heart of every thriving community lies a shared commitment to giving back, looking out for one another and valuing inclusion.
Social enterprises, organisations that merge business objectives with creating social outcomes, are fundamental to achieving this vision. More than just selling products and services, these ventures create profound ripple effects that strengthen local economies, expand opportunities for growth and connection and enhance wellbeing for individuals. Here in the Illawarra, we have our fair share.
As the new leader of Greenacres Disability Services, I am humbled by its 71-year history of creating opportunity for people with disability. Greenacres' Community and Social Enterprises are dedicated to fostering meaningful work and skill development for people of all abilities. Creating inclusive workplaces and employment for people with disability is a critical challenge.
In 2022, just 56 per cent of people with disabilities of working age are employed, compared to 82 per cent of those without disability. This disparity has significant consequences. Unemployment can lead to social isolation, declining mental and physical health, and a loss of independence.
Statistics surrounding disability employment in Australia underscore the vital role that social enterprises play in this region. Alongside other reputable organisations such as Flagstaff and The Disability Trust, these local organisations collectively employ over 500 people with disability in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions. Organisations like ours invest heavily in skill development and training, providing meaningful work, and pathways to employment across the community.
Launching pads for independence and confidence, they ensure everyone has a chance to participate and thrive. Not only are people with disability given the choice of meaningful work that is right for them, the experience working within these businesses can be transformative. Skills, training, and work create community connections, boosts self-esteem, and improves overall health and wellbeing.
For many, these organisations offer a stepping-stone to other types of employment, where confidence gained paves the way for broader opportunities. These social enterprises help to genuinely dismantle barriers that prevent full participation in the workforce. For those of us choosing to purchase more consciously, voting with our wallet on the kind of world we want to support makes a big difference.
Plus, it can have a significant multiplier effect with every dollar invested generating jobs and stimulating local economies. More than that, these local outfits engage regional suppliers and partners, amplifying their impact across sectors. For instance, Greenacres' packaging and labelling services support local manufacturers by providing quality, cost-effective solutions.
Flagstaff's laundry provides local hospitality businesses with quality linen, and its kitchen provides meals for older people who need support. Cafés run by Greenacres, One Door and The Disability Trust offer great coffee and welcoming spaces for all while highlighting the capabilities of people with disabilities. There are many more in our region that also support environmental outcomes and social good.
While these organisations drive change and make a difference, they rely heavily on (and are deeply grateful for) the community that invests in their success. By supporting them, individuals and businesses contribute to a more inclusive society and a healthier economy. More than charity; making a conscious choice about where you spend your dollar empowers diversity.
As individuals, we can choose to support social enterprises through our purchasing decisions. As businesses, we can partner with them to create shared value. And as a community, we can embrace a proactive approach to inclusion and equity.
Where we spend our limited funds is not just a catalyst for change but also a testament to what we can achieve together. By investing in the success of organisations that give back to social good, we are investing in the health, well-being, and prosperity of our entire community.
