Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge sent out a strong message to "non-performing leaders" in the grand old party, saying that those not helping in party work should retire. Speaking at the AICC session on the banks of Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, Kharge said those who do not help in party work, need to rest and those who do not fulfil their responsibilities must retire. His remarks were greeted with applause from Congress leaders and workers.

The Congress president added that the role of district Congress committee presidents in the organisation will be greatly enhanced and they will henceforth have a say in the selection of party candidates. "The role of district presidents is going to be important in the formation of the organisation. Therefore, their appointment has to be done strictly and impartially as per the AICC guidelines," he said.

In his address, Kharge also raked up opposition allegation of "fraud" and wrongoing in the Maharashtra elections held last year. He attacked the Election Commission for not stopping the "irregularities" and instead taunting the parties raising questions. Kharge made a strong pitch for returning to paper ballots.
