Condoms in party invitation package spark debate, divide opinions

Pune: A Koregaon Park establishment has sparked controversy by including condoms with ORS packets and other goodies in their New Year party invitation packages for patrons. The move prompted the Maharashtra Pradesh Yuvak Congress to approach Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar to demand action against the establishment for contradicting Pune's educational and cultural heritage. The complaint suggested that including contraceptives with party invitations sent inappropriate signals to youngsters, promoting undesirable social behaviour.

However, the recipients, all aged above 21, supported the initiative, noting the practicality of the items and the promotion of safe sexual practices. "We received screenshots of stories put up on social media about the invitation hamper by some people who perceived the thought of including condoms in the packages against our culture. They asked me to do something about it.



I was in Delhi for work, but I sent a complaint application to the Pune police," Akshay Jain, president of Maharashtra Pradesh Yuvak Congress, said. "We were informed by the establishment that the condom was included in the packages to promote safe sex practices . While we do not have anything against the party culture in Pune, it should be done properly," Jain said.

The venue distributed approximately 80-90 invitation hampers to regular customers, with many recipients sharing positive feedback on social media platforms. Pune police commissioner Kumar told TOI, "We are looking into the issue. We will take stern action if any pub, bar or such establishment make and publish misleading and malicious advertisements to attract customers to their premises.

" Zaid Khan of the establishment that distributed the invitation hampers said, "The hamper contained pre-and post-party knickknacks, such as confetti bombs, caps, a card with contact of a chauffeur service to avoid drunken driving, ORS to prevent getting dehydrated, and condoms for ensuring safe sexual health. All these items were thoughtfully included in the package to spread the message of responsible partying. The people who received the hampers are regular patrons, but no one told us that they felt offended with the package.

Instead, they sent us messages thanking us for the thoughtful invitations." The recipients questioned the controversy. "Giving condoms as gifts to adults is not a crime.

In fact during the AIDS awareness campaigns and family planning campaigns by govt, condoms were distributed to spread awareness of safe sex practices," said a 29-year-old receiver of the hamper. The ministry of health and family welfare maintains its Condom Promotion Programme (CPP) for distribution of contraceptives across various states in India. Another recipient said, "It is time we remove stigma from such things as condoms.

Controversies such as this are regressive and not needed in a country where sex education still needs to be implemented at various levels."
