Computer scientist encourages girls to pursue ICT studies

By VELERIE BULUMARIS THE Post-graduate school of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at University of Technology has graduated a woman last Friday. Researcher Samania Ned was among three undergraduates. She received her Master of Philosophy in Computer Science during the university’s 57th graduation ceremony in Lae.

She undertook the program for the last three years researching on the use of block chain-based self-sovereign digital identity for patient registry in PNG. The area of study focuses on recording digital ID of patients to harness the ongoing issues health system has in health supply shortage. Her challenges lie with juggling ongoing carrier as the operations manager of the Digital Identification Bureau and taking care of her two children, Ms Ned acknowledged her family and daughters for being her inspiration yet push in her carrier both academic and employment, as she tackles adjustments between her carriers.



She also flourished in the ICT industry and uses her skills to voluntary teaching children ages 12 and 13 in the Pomis coding club in Port Moresby. The computer scientist encourages girls to take up ICT, “our country needs more Information Technologists and girls can do more than that”, Ms Ned said. ICT is involving in the next five years in PNG and women are rarely taking that field, thus she urged more young women to take up the course either alone or with other courses,.
