Community receive lottery funding for LGBTQ archiving project

An archiving community has received support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for the development of the project archiving LGBTQ heritage in the city.

An archiving community has received support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for the development of the project preserving LGBTQ heritage in the city. Queer Heritage South is a heritage learning project “celebrating and promoting the rich cultural life of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Intersex, Transgender and Queer (LGBTIQ+) community in Brighton and Hove and the South”. They have announced initial support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for the development of the project “ Queer Heritage South: Live Archive”.

The funding will help support Queer Heritage South progress their plans with the hope of securing a further three years of funding in 2025. Volunteers archiving photographs from the queer scene (Image: Queer Heritage South) Coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967, there will be a major community curated public exhibition with Brighton Museum and in public spaces across Brighton and Hove in 2027. In their most recent session, volunteers from Queer Heritage South unearthed significant cultural artefacts including a collection of lesbian pin badges, photographs from the gay community and archive editions of Gay News.
