The Victoria Regional Airport took another step forward in the reconstruction of its taxiway named Charlie as Victoria County Commissioners approved a $10.6 million grant for the venue. “This is the first part of a sequence of grants that commissioners court has been pursuing for a very long time.

With the great work of our airport director, we’ve been able to secure the first phase of this funding,” County Judge Ben Zeller says. “We’ll do a lot of necessary things with it, but we fully anticipate similarly large grant awards in the future as we seek to rehab the taxiways and the runway.” The grant, from the Federal Aviation Administration, will fund the rehab of taxiways, the runway and electrical vault improvements, Zeller says.

Last year, the county fronted a part of the grant in the amount of $1.6 million, which enabled the Victoria Regional Airport to receive the full grant sooner, Zeller says. “This is really a big win for the for the airport, some very necessary taxiway improvements, and this overall effort will be spread out over many years,” Zeller says.

“It’ll be many millions of dollars over many years, and I think it just is another step forward and another success story about what we’re achieving at the airport.” Much of the construction materials for the airport improvements will be purchased in Victoria, which will help boost the local economy, Director of the Victoria Regional Airport Lenny Llerena says. The commissioners court also approved another grant during its regular meeting Monday, for a new water truck for the Victoria County Fire Department.

The grant totals $30,000 and has been considered a necessity for the county. The grant was awarded by Union Pacific, Zeller says. “This is another example of the county pursuing grants as an effort to provide needed services and to acquire needed equipment without relying on local taxpayers for those funds,” Zeller says.
