The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has no shortage of oohs and aahs this season, what with two penguin chicks hatchings and other significant arrivals. As reported by WBNS, the latest additions hatched shortly after Valentine's Day, with one appearing on February 18 and the other on February 20. Before being introduced to eager visitors, these aquatic babies must attend "penguin preschool," a nurturing process designed to build up their strength and get them acclimated to their new watery world.
Details shared by the Columbus Zoo on their Facebook page reveal that the first penguin chick is the progeny of Big Bertha "BB" Cobblepot and Dr. Oswald Cobblepot, while the second chick is the offspring of Asela Bellefontaine and Professor Phineas Sprinklebottom. According to a Facebook post cited by NBC4i, the timeline to debut these youngsters publicly is set for later in the year, with "penguin preschool" preparing them to dive and effectively swim in deeper water.
Beyond the penguins, the zoo announced the birth of over 70 baby seahorses during January and February, a significant event considering it's been nearly two years since the last hatching. Like their penguin counterparts, these seahorse hatchlings are currently off-view as they grow and are prepared to transition to a larger habitat. The zoo initially shared the information about the seahorses on social media, which was corroborated by a report from Spectrum News 1.
The zoo is also eagerly anticipating the arrival of two Asian elephant calves in the upcoming months. On Tuesday, images from a recent sonogram of the pregnant elephant Phoebe were posted, hinting at another addition to the zoo's growing family. The zoo's animal care and veterinary teams closely monitor Phoebe and Sunny as they approach their due dates, with Phoebe's calf expected in the fall.
This detail was mentioned in the report by NBC4i, highlighting increased attention and care at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium..
