The Colorado State football team defeated Northern Colorado 38-17 Saturday evening at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins. The game was the first between the teams since 2016, and CSU won for the 20th-straight time in the series and 21st time overall dating at least to 1900. UNC’s only win came by a forfeit in October 1900.

CSU led 7-0 before its offense saw the field. Receiver Tory Horton returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown after UNC went three-and-out on its first possession. Horton went out of the game in the third quarter with an apparent injury.

CSU coach Jay Norvell said later he didn’t know the status of Horton, who is an All-Mountain West Conference pass catcher and NFL prospect. “Hopefully it won’t be serious enough where he misses too much time,” the coach said. “It’s too early to tell right now.

UNC starting quarterback Peter Costelli left late in the fourth quarter with an apparent leg injury. He came up lame and limping after a 6-yard quarterback keeper run with just under 5 minutes to play. Costelli ran again on the next play and lost three yards and remained down on the field.

He was attended to by UNC trainers, who appeared to look at the quarterback’s left leg. Costelli limped off the field with the trainers and Bears coach Ed Lamb. Lamb said after the game he didn’t have an update on Costelli’s injury.

Costelli said he was OK while walking in the hallway after the game. UNC dropped to 0-2 this season, and have lost 14-consecutive games dating to the start of the 2023 season. The Bears’ last win was Nov.
