
Colorado Springs residents can expect cloudy skies on Monday and a high of 70, but strong breezes and dust will fill the air too, with a red flag warning in effect after 11 a.m. A windy start to the week on the eastern slopes and across the foothills, according to Gazette news partner KOAA and the National Weather Service.
"A storm moving into the West Coast today will lead to much more widespread wind this afternoon across southern Colorado," KOAA Meteorologist Alan Rose said. "30-50 mph wind gusts, combined with single digit relative humidity and dry fuels have prompted more red flag warnings starting at 11 a.m.
" For the Pikes Peak region, warnings will remain in place until midnight, but could expire as early as 8 p.m. "Temperatures today will be well above average, topping out in the lower to middle 70s in Colorado Springs," Rose said.
Things are expected to get a little chilly on Tuesday with temperatures dropping by about 10-15 degrees, dropping the high back down into the 50s. "Strong southwest wind in advance of our next cold front will keep fire danger threats very high, with a Red Flag Warning back in effect from 11 am until 8 p.m.
," said Rose. "Gusts in Colorado Springs could top 40-45 mph on Tuesday." A cold front Tuesday night will shift wind north and it will remain gusty into Wednesday morning with a chance for snow to develop by early Tuesday evening, with chances for accumulation around Monument Hill.
"1-3 inches of snow will be possible in the Tri-Lakes area, with 1-2" possible in northern and western parts of the Colorado Springs metro area," Rose said. "Accumulations are not expected on the south sides of town." Things will dry up again on Wednesday, but temperatures will be in the lower 40s and may warm into the 50s later this week, but with chances of high winds and threat of fire danger Thursday.
"A few snow showers could spill back into the I-25 corridor by Friday morning," said Rose. "Right now, impacts from snow late this week look small." Here's the four-day forecast from the National Weather Service : Tuesday: A chance of rain showers between noon and 5 p.
m., then a chance of snow showers after 5 p.m.
Patchy blowing dust after noon. Increasing clouds, with a high near 60. Breezy, with a southwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming west southwest 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon.
Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 44.
North northwest wind 10 to 15 mph. Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 58. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south southwest 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon.
Friday: A 20% chance of snow showers before noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 51. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
