Coleen Rooney is reportedly "devastated" following the dismissal of her husband Wayne from his managerial role at Plymouth Argyle, insiders claim. The former Manchester United and England legend was axed from Home Park after a dismal streak left the team languishing at the bottom of the Championship standings. With only four victories during his tenure, none on the road, Wayne's stint at Argyle was short-lived.
This marks his second managerial departure in less than a year, having been let go by Birmingham City in January 2024, with the club ultimately facing relegation despite efforts from new management. Speculation is rife that Wayne could make a comeback to TV sports punditry, where he previously impressed, as broadcasters are believed to be keen on securing his services. Coleen, recently in the spotlight on ' I'm a Celebrity ', is said to have been a staunch supporter of Wayne's coaching ambitions.
A source close to the couple told The Mail: "Coleen was so keen for Wayne's managerial career to work out. She knows how much he wanted it and she knows how much he loves football." The friend also suggested Coleen believes football keeps her husband busy and "out of trouble".
After a promising start to the season, Plymouth's form took a nosedive, resulting in nine losses over 15 matches and a steep fall in league position. Kevin Nancekivell and Joe Edwards jointly took the reins as caretakers for the struggling team's first match of 2025. Bristol City, who visited Home Park, took the lead twice, but Julio Pleguezuelo managed to secure a late point.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, particularly Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip with whom I had great relationships," said Wayne after stepping down from his role. "Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and contribute to making the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my tenure as Head Coach. I wish them all the best for the future.
"To the Green Army, thanks for making the games at Home Park so memorable, they are memories that we will cherish forever. I would also like to give a special mention to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan and Mike Phelan for their knowledge, dedication, assistance and support. "Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to follow and take interest in their results.
