Their performance on Thursday night? Ageless.

Jimmy still did his vein-popping vocals, Ian was a guitar maestro with a silky-smooth voice, Don was on fire on the keyboard, Phil seems to be the band's Benjamin Button, ageing backwards, and Charley Drayton, on the drums for Chisel since 2011, was non-stop energy. Throw in the fantastic musicianship of Andy Bickers (sax) and Dave Blight (harmonica) and the back-up singers EJ Barnes, Juanita Tippins and Bek Jensen and it was a brilliant concert. Even Albo was there.

. The Big Five-0 concert with more than 9000 other fans at Commonwealth Park. Alongside Albo was Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, a bit of a muso himself, playing guitar in a band of parliamentarians.

It was a perfect night for an outdoor concert - warm, still and dry. Even the bats in the park weren't perturbed by Jimmy's powerhouse vocals. A nice change from the last time Cold Chisel played in Canberra, again at Stage 88, in January 2020, as smoke from the Black Summer bushfires choked the city.

(That, for me, was Ita . Still blows me away that a hard-rock band wrote a song about media maven Ita Buttrose.) But, other than that, there were no complaints, Chisel gave their all.

. until now We meat again: Monster Restaurant and Bar returns to omnivore dining Sizzling in the capital: where to swim this summer The other lovely thing about the concert was the audience - slightly tipsy Gen- Xers and Boomers who've all lived a little. We've got wrinkles, paunches, bags under our eyes.

And we do love a chair at a concert. So we re-lived the soundtrack to our youth and were still home relatively early for a cup of tea in bed. Rock on! Share Facebook Twitter Whatsapp Email Copy Megan Doherty Journalist I like telling local stories and celebrating Canberra.
