The Region 7-5A cross country championships were decided on the trails at Wannamaker Park in North Charleston Tuesday, Nov. 5. Cane Bay’s boys team and Stratford’s Chase Hoppock were the top finishers from the Berkeley County School District.
The Cobras placed their top five runners inside the top 16, led by junior Jax Kelly in eighth place, to finish runner-up to team champion Wando. Also for the Cobras, junior Jackson Novak placed 10th. Hoppock paced Stratford’s boys by placing second behind individual winner Maxwell Winters of Wando.
Senior Jordan Shelton was fifth for the Knights, who ended up fourth behind Lucy Beckham. Fifth-place Berkeley was led by freshman Jack Hicks in 22nd place. Sixth-place Goose Creek was paced by eighth-grader Dalton Gillespie in 29th place.
In the girls’ race, Wando earned the region championship ahead of runner-up Lucy Beckham and third-place Stratford. Lucy Beckham sophomore Julia Goldman won the girls race. Senior Cloe Runion and junior Emily Knox guided the Knights in sixth and eighth place, respectively.
Sophomore Sophia Thill and senior Haley Lovelady were 10th and 12th place for Stratford. Cane Bay’s girls finished fourth, led by eighth-grader Zelia Shook and senior Claire Orth in 15th and 18th place. Sophomore Cynthia Coronel Reyes paced fifth-place Berkeley in 17th place.
