Exit polls paint a bleak picture of the US with three in four voters having a negative perception of the current state of affairs in the US. Only about one-quarter express enthusiasm or satisfaction with the nation's position, with over four in 10 expressing dissatisfaction and roughly three in 10 stating they're angry. However, voters remain largely hopeful , with over six in 10 believing that America's best days lie ahead, and only about one-third thinking they're already behind us.

President Joe Biden's approval rating is below par nationally, with around 4 in 10 voters approving of his performance and the majority disapproving, CNN exit polls have shown. Can Donald Trump legally vote in Florida? Yes and it's a legal loophole Donald Trump accused of parading 'fake Melania' at polls as she refuses to take off sunglasses This broad scope makes them a potent tool for understanding the demographic profile and political views of voters in this year's election. Their findings will eventually be compared against the ultimate benchmark: the actual election results.

Nevertheless, exit polls are still polls, with margins for error - which means they're most effective when treated as estimates, rather than exact measurements. This is especially true for the earliest exit poll figures, which haven't yet been adjusted to align with the final election results. CNN exit polls are a blend of in-person interviews with Election Day voters and a mix of in-person, telephone and online polls gauging the opinions of early and absentee by-mail voters.

Edison Research conducted these on behalf of the National Election Pool. On Election Day, in-person interviews were carried out at a random selection of 279 polling stations. According to CNN's national exit poll of voters in this year's presidential election, only about one-third believe the economy is in good or excellent condition, a decrease from the half who said the same in 2020. About one-third describe the economy as not so good, and another third label it as poor. Only a quarter of voters feel they're personally better off than they were four years ago, with roughly 45% claiming they're worse off, and about 3 in 10 stating they're doing about the same.

In contrast, 2020 exit polling revealed that about 4 in 10 felt they were doing better, and just 20% believed they were worse off. In this year's exit poll, about one-fifth of voters say inflation has caused them and their family severe hardship over the past year, with more than half saying it's caused moderate hardship, and about one-quarter that it's caused no hardship at all. Harris supporters, according to CNN's national exit poll initial results, claim their vote was primarily in support of their candidate, rather than a vote against their opponent.

When asked to select the most important quality from four options leadership ability, empathy for people like them, good judgement or the ability to bring about necessary change Trump supporters overwhelmingly prioritised leadership and the capacity for change. Less than one-tenth chose the other two options. Harris voters were more evenly divided on the qualities they valued most: approximately one-third selected judgement, just under 3 in 10 chose empathy, about one-fifth opted for leadership ability, and the smallest group prioritised the ability to bring change.
