LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered the enforcement of a state-of-the-art ‘Referral System’ in the government hospitals across Punjab to reduce unnecessary load of patients from small health centres and clinics to the specialized hospitals.

The chief minister has also sought a comprehensive plan for the implementation of a Referral System In this connection, CM Maryam Nawaz presided over a special meeting in which health reforms were reviewed. It was decided in the meeting that a state-of-the-art medical city will be established in Lahore on the model of Texas, Jeddah, Doha.

The services of a professional consultant will be hired for the establishment of a world-class ‘medical city’. The Punjab government will provide basic facilities to establish the best private hospital in the Medical City Lahore. The Chief Minister directed to allocate land at a suitable location to establish Medical City Lahore.



The meeting gave in-principle approval for the establishment of the Medical City Authority. The meeting also decided in principle to establish a medical city in each divisional headquarter. The CM directed to take steps in order to establish state-of-the-art medical facilities at the district level.

A special ‘Helpline 999’ will also be established for matters relating to the government hospitals. In the meeting, Secretary Specialized Health & Medical Education presented a detailed briefing on the health reforms. It was informed in the briefing that there has been 92 percent improvement in infection control in government hospitals, while 92 percent improvement has been overseen in the process of providing medicines.

In hospitals of Lahore, 83 percent of available facilities are being provided to the patients and 75 percent of the duty roster display orders are being implemented. The CM was also briefed that 75 percent improvement has been noted in the patient complaint redressal system, 71pc improvement in the queue management system and 84 percent improvement in cleanliness issues has been observed in the government hospitals. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif paid a surprise visit to Services Hospital on her way back from office on Wednesday.

She made a detailed inspection of the emergency ward of Services Hospital and reviewed facilities being provided to the patients and observed treatment of patients in the ward. She inquired from the patients and attendants about availability of medicines in the emergency ward. The chief minister expressed satisfaction over the arrangements and also interacted with the patients undergoing treatment in the emergency ward.

She had a light conversation with a young patient, shook hands with the women and also inquired about their well-being. 49 arrested, 100 shops sealed on profiteering While speaking on the occasion, she said, “The conditions of the hospitals have improved a lot due to timely action being taken in Jinnah and Mayo Hospitals. Medicines were lying in boxes in Jinnah Hospital but the patients remained deprived to obtain them and patients got relief owing to prompt action being taken in this regard.

” She added, “I am leaving Services Hospital with satisfaction as no one complained that medicines had to be brought from outside the hospital and patients did not even have to wait for their turn regarding medical examination.” She added, “Announcements are being made in hospitals as the government is providing free medicines. If someone takes money from you, you will not pay a single penny.

” She said, “It is the responsibility of the Chief Minister to randomly check the hospitals for the well-being of patients. If the Chief Minister does not work, how come subordinate staff will deliver their duties. It is the Chief Minister’s job to visit the field in order to assess the prevailing situation as I cannot sit idle in the office.

” New members of Health Care Commission notified She added, “Provision of medicines is the foremost responsibility of the government. Patients do not need to buy medicines from the market. Cabinets have been placed in the hospitals and the patients can see that the medicines which they need are available in the cabinets.
