‘Close-knit’ Co Down community in shock following woman’s death

A community in County Down are in shock following the sudden death of a woman over the weekend. Police remain at the scene in Laurel Heights, Banbridge, Co Down on Sunday with a road sealed off. Emergency services attended the scene following an incident at around 6pm on Saturday.

The PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) and NIAS (Northern Ireland Ambulance Service) both confirmed they had attended the scene. The NIAS said they attended the scene after receiving a 999 call at 18.23 regarding ‘reports of an incident’ in the Banbridge agea.



They said: ‘Following initial assessment, no patients were taken from the scene.’ DUP MP Carla Lockhart branded the incident ‘tragic’ as she extended sympathies to the family of the deceased. She confirmed that the scene was currently held by the PSNI and said there would be ‘a significant police presence in the area for some time.

’ Ms Lockhart said: ‘I would ask everyone to give officers the time and space they need to conduct their investigation. ‘If anyone has any information that could assist the police, I would urge you to come forward as soon as possible.’ Alliance Party councillor Joy Ferguson said the Banbridge community were ‘really shocked’ particularly those in Laurel Heights.

Speaking to the BBC she noted that the community was a ‘very close-knit’ one. Ulster Unionist MLA Doug Beattie took to social media to extend his own condolences to the family and friends of the woman as well as the police officers dealing with it..
