The Cleveland Cavaliers are eager to build on their surprisingly incredible season with a deep postseason run. While there’s no assurance that they’ll finish the postseason with an NBA Finals appearance, it’s also clear that the team will look to run it back with their current core next season. It seemed that the team might stumble out of the top seed after a four-game losing skid in March .
However, they secured their spot at the top of the Eastern Conference after convincing wins against strong squads around the league. Their most recent game—a narrow win against the San Antonio Spurs —had their star man talking about the importance of a strong team mentality as they prepare for postseason basketball. Donovan Mitchell stresses improvement for Cleveland Cavaliers after narrow win over San Antonio Donovan Mitchell had a terrific night for the Cavaliers’ 114-113 win over a Spurs team without Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox.
He finished with a team-high 26 points, three rebounds, seven assists, and one steal. However, his abysmal 8-for-18 shooting puts a cloud over a solid individual night for him. The rest of the Cavs also had a poor night defensively.
While the Spurs had a terrible 33% clip on the floor, the fact that they allowed the Spurs to make 15 of their 19 long-range attempts made the game closer than necessary. Mitchell wants his teammates to take things seriously and finish the season strongly with the top seed in the East. Per Heavy Sports’ Adam Taylor : “We gotta be better on all fronts,” Mitchell said.
“There is no way. We gotta be better. It starts with me.
.. We’ve gotta be better.
Simple as that—Big time. We gotta go out there and take care of business on Sunday. Play a full 48 and clinch the 1 seed.
” It’s reasonable for Mitchell to expect his teammates to expect high out of his teammates. The Cavs wouldn’t have a 62-15 record if they hadn’t been playing fantastic basketball all season. The Cavs cannot afford to drop games in the postseason, and setting that standard in the regular season will help them have a great playoffs.
Mitchell has been doing a lot of heavy lifting for the Cavs, averaging 24 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.
3 steals on 44% shooting and 37% from deep. Cavaliers fans can count on their star man to keep the tempo up for the Cavs as they prepare to make a long postseason run. This article first appeared on Hardwood Heroics and was syndicated with permission.
