Pianist Yunchan Lim, classical music’s newest superstar, will make his Nebraska debut Friday at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Originally slated to play the Lied Center in April 2023, Lim had to postpone because of an ear infection that prevented him from traveling. That concert was rescheduled 17 months later, evidence of the international demand for a performance by Lim, who in 2022 became the youngest Gold Award winner in history at the Van Cliburn International Competition.
Called a “one-in-a-million talent” by the Dallas Morning News with “the potential to become a once-in-generation pianist” (The New Yorker), Lim has been selling out major venues with performances that music publication La Scena says showcase a “magical ability” and a “natural, instinctive quality.” The program for Lim’s Lied Center performance will include Bach-Busoni: Chorale Prelude Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland BWV 659 and Bach's Goldberg Variations BWV 988. .. Born in Siheung, South Korea, Lim began piano lessons at age 7, and entered the Music Academy of the Seoul Arts Center the following year.
He auditioned for and was accepted into the Korea National Institute for the Gifted in Arts at age 13, where he met his teacher and mentor, Minsoo Sohn. He entered the international music stage a year later, in 2018, winning second prize and the Chopin Special Award in his first-ever competition, the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists. In 2019, at 15, he was the youngest person to win Korea’s IsangYun International Competition, also taking home two special prizes.
Lim also completed two years at the Korea National University of Arts, and is studying at the New England Conservatory with Sohn. Lim’s prize-winning performance of Liszt’s Transcendental Études from the Van Cliburn competition was released in July 2023, debuting at No. 5 on Billboard’s Traditional Classical Albums chart.
He has also recorded Beethoven’s "Emperor" Piano Concerto, released in 2022 on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m.
