MINNEAPOLIS — On the first day of the state girls diving tournament, defending diving state champion Alayna Kennedy placed first in the Class 1A preliminary and semifinal rounds. The Austin senior scored 203.40 in the prelims and 318.
45 in the semis. Kennedy will defend her state title during the Class 1A swimming and diving finals at noon on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. ADVERTISEMENT Red Wing sophomore Kylie Moffett placed 11th in the prelims, scoring 159.

John Marshall’s senior Shannon Penney, who is one of the few athletes competing in both the diving and swimming events at state, placed 17th in the preliminary round on Thursday with a score of 166.80. Penney finished in 19th place scoring 251.
