Excelsior Correspondent Srinagar, Oct 5: A Class 10 student from a Government School in Bandipora district has developed an innovative ‘Smart Waste Disinfection Bin’ to reduce the infection-spreading potential of collected waste. Asif Ali Butto, from Government Higher Secondary School Nowgam, Sonawari, said the idea stemmed from recognizing that unattended waste leads to various diseases, and he wanted to make a difference. Speaking with ‘Excelsior’, Asif shared that his teachers informed him about a model-making competition under ‘Swachhta Pakhwada,’ encouraging him to create something unique for the theme.

“I decided to participate and develop the ‘Smart Waste Disinfection Bin,’ which uses infrared rays to kill bacteria and other microorganisms in the waste, reducing the risk of infections,” he explained. Asif’s innovation earned him first place in the Divisional-Level Model Making competition, where he received the award from LG Manoj Sinha, along with a cash prize of Rs 15,000 and a certificate. “Waste impacts humans by causing infections and leading to diseases.

I wanted to contribute in my own way, and hopefully, this small step will have a bigger impact in ensuring clean and safe surroundings,” he said. Asif, who has a passion for creating models that offer solutions to everyday problems, said it took him nearly three days to build the bin, with guidance from his teachers. “My teachers have been very supportive, especially Tajamul Sir, who constantly motivates me to innovate and participate in competitions, giving me the chance to learn and explore new areas,” he said.

Despite some people advising him to focus solely on his studies and dismissing his interest in innovation as “useless,” Asif said he remained determined. “I stayed focused and didn’t let it affect my studies. Today, I’m proud that LG has recognized my work, and my model stood out.

I’ve made my community proud, and that means a lot to me.” A resident of Asif’s locality remarked that his achievement has brought pride to the entire area and will inspire other young people to pursue productive endeavours. The young innovator reiterated his commitment to continue working towards positive change in society, focusing on innovation in areas that need attention.

“I will keep working on innovations, bringing solutions to the problems around us; the aim remains to make life easier,” he said..
