: Clashes erupted between police and a mob during Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid survey in Sambhal here on Sunday. The police had to resort to the use of tear gas and lathi-charge to disperse a mob as they started to threw stones at officers conducting the second survey of the mosque in Sambhal. The unruly mob got as far as to torch some vehicles.
Meanwhile, the team managed to complete the survey under police protection and was safely escorted out of the area. As per the order of the a local court, the survey was conducted on the mosque. A survey order came following a petition which claimed that the mosque was built on the ruins of the Harihar temple.
According to the local administration, the second survey by an “Advocate Commissioner” as part of a court-ordered examination into the disputed site began around 7 am. Police authorities stated that they were attacked with stones by some miscreants who hide among the gathered crowd while the survey was ongoing at the Shahi Jama Masjid. In order to bring the situation under control, they has to use minor force and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The police said investigation is ongoing and the miscreants will be identified and arrested. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya has reacted on the incident and said that action will be taken against people who hindered the survey..
