CJI DY Chandrachud proposed Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor - Who is he

If approved by the government, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India. He is set to serve a tenure of six months, concluding on May 13, 2025, before his retirement.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday (October 17) formally proposed Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor. In a communication to the Union government, the CJI stated that since he is demitting office on November 11, Justice Khanna would be his successor. Upon approval by the government, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India.

He is set to serve a tenure of six months, concluding on May 13, 2025, before his retirement. Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna Justice Khanna is the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court. He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983 and practiced at the district courts.



Later, he practised in the High Court of Delhi and tribunals. He also served as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department for nearly seven years. In 2004, he became the Standing Counsel (Civil) for the NCT of Delhi, reports said.

He also appeared as an Additional Public Prosecutor and an amicus curie in criminal cases at the Delhi High Court. In 2005, he became an additional judge of the Delhi High Court and a permanent judge a year later. Justice Khanna also served in positions such as Chairman/Judge-in-charge, Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Centre and the District Court Mediation Centres.

On January 18, 2019, he became the Judge of the Supreme Court. He is presently the Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority, and a member of the Governing Counsel of the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal. Chandrachud took over as the CJI on November 9, 2022.

His tenure as the CJI will end on November 10. Judges of the Supreme Court retire by the age of 65..
