City to remember Bhagat Singh with milk drinking contest

Times News Network Ludhiana: To celebrate the birth anniversary of martyr Bhagat Singh , the district administration will organise competitions of milk drinking, turban tying and painting, besides holding a blood donation camp at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) on September 28. “The events will be aimed at encouraging youngsters to stay away from drugs and promote a healthy lifestyle,” said an official statement. Additional deputy commissioner Major Amit Sareen announced the details at a meeting of the district level committee under the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) in Bachat Bhawan.

In the milk drinking competition, participants will have to drink as many bottles of Verka milk as they can in 30 seconds. The top five winners will be selected, with the first-place winner receiving a cash reward of Rs 2,100 and the other four receiving gifts and books. The turban tying competition, for which only saffron turbans will be allowed, will be held at PAU the same day.



Participants will have to wear a turban in the style of martyr Bhagat Singh. Registration for both competitions will be open from Monday to Wednesday (September 23 to September 25) from 9am to 5pm.

According to the official statement, only the first 50 registrations for both boys and girls will be eligible for the competitions. A blood donation camp and a painting competition will also be organised at PAU on the occasion.

District administration officials said that a cycle rally would also be held from Mall road to a private hospital on Chandigarh road on September 29 to spread the message against drugs. The additional deputy commissioner emphasised the need for people to follow in the footsteps of Bhagat Singh to make Punjab a drug-free state . He also called for collective efforts to eliminate the drug menace from society, saying that it was the biggest hurdle in realising the dreams of Bhagat Singh and freedom fighters who fought for the country's independence.
