Pune: The city traffic police , who maintain a vigil at intersections across areas, are now actively engaged in geotagging potholes that plague the thoroughfares. The rationale behind this move is to ascertain whether the contractor commissioned by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for that route has effectively rectified the identified potholes. They also aim to track down new potholes that have surfaced on the roads , leading to traffic jam situations.

In the last two weeks, they have geotagged 800 potholes. “We want to create a permanent digital system to repair and maintain roads in coordination with PMC authorities. Once the location of a pothole is taken using a geotagging system, its coordinates are shared with civic officials, and their teams then repair it,” additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil told TOI.

In the latter part of July, the traffic police conducted an exhaustive survey that revealed 554 potholes across 317 critical junctions on the city’s roads, which significantly contribute to traffic congestion. At the time, only junctions were covered by the police. However now, the police are checking the surfaces of all the roads in the city.

Following the recent deluge, potholes have resurfaced on numerous roads, exacerbating traffic snarls. Police teams are diligently collecting updated data on these potholes along with photographs and geotagging their locations. This comprehensive information is subsequently shared with PMC authorities, enabling the civic body to undertake the necessary repair work.

Patil added, “A separate police vehicle has been designed for this purpose, and the vehicle moves around the city. As it travels, police personnel and geotagging experts take photographs and locations of potholes. It consumes hardly any time.

” He said, “Once the data is shared with PMC on the potholes with their exact locations, civic officials then execute repair works. The local traffic division officials inspect the spot once again thereafter.” We also published the following articles recently Mumbai: Coastal road pothole repairs anger motorists Concerns have been raised by citizens regarding the repair quality on the north-bound coastal road near Haji Ali junction.
