MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The topic bringing business owners, a lawmaker, and city leaders together at the Raleigh Library quickly turned to the rise in gun violence over the last week. Police Chief CJ Davis said her department has investigated twenty-eight homicides already in April, with five days left to go in the month.
She and Mayor Paul Young both talked about the role children are having in all this, as well as what parents can do to keep their children out of the line of fire. Mayor Young quickly addressed the deadly events in the city this week, “As I think about the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen far too much violence in our city. It’s been completely unacceptable.
Heartbreaking to see young people losing their lives senselessly.“ said Young. The Mayor was referring to the past seven days, filled with a seemingly endless string of violence.
At least fifteen people killed and twenty more hurt in more than two dozen shootings in Memphis and Shelby County. Young lamented the fact that many of the victims and alleged perpetrators were children. “These young people is somebody’s son, it’s somebody’s nephew, somebody’s cousin.
It’s some OG in the neighborhood who knows these young folks that needs to be speaking some life into them and changing the course of their trajectory," the mayor said. Police Chief CJ Davis said it's hard for most people to wrap their minds around the amount of gun violence right now and shares advice to parents to reduce the chances of their kids getting caught up in the gunfire, “We are appealing to the community to help us. Parents, get your children! That was the CJ Davis that came out in me.
..” Davis paused, before taking a more somber tone when she continued, “.
..Parents, get your children!!! If you want life and you love your children, help them stay alive by paying attention to them just like the mayor said.
Either they will die through gun violence, or they will end their lives in jail.” Mayor Young also shared an idea of something simple parents can do to help, For the parents, the guardians, if you see a young person walking out of your household with a hoodie on when it’s hot outside with a backpack on, and it’s not a school day, you need to ask some questions. You need to check the backpack.
.. You doing that check is going to save their life,” said Young.
