U.S. theatrical exhibition chain Cinemark have announced a new promotion set to roll out later this month – the Bring Your Own Bucket campaign.

It takes place on Sunday January 19th, aka. National Popcorn Day – the first of four ‘@ the Movies’ promotions for this year that the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) hopes to boost attendance at cinemas. The plan replaces their National Cinema Day promotions from 2022 and 2023.

Under the campaign, Cinemark will fill whatever container you decide to bring in up with popcorn for $5 – though there’s a limit of 400 ounces/3.125 gallons/11.8 litres worth of popcorn.

Concessions workers have the right to refuse serving a dirty bucket, and there are no free refills, mobile ordering, or third-party delivering – you want it, you have to go to the cinema itself to get it in person. If you don’t have a bucket, the Cinemark Shop will sell you one. Cinemark will also run a social media contest showing off your custom bucket for a chance to win even more free popcorn.

The event comes as studios have been doing increasingly elaborate popcorn bucket promotions for their films from the now legendary Dune sandworm to an open-mouth Wolverine to a “Gladiator II” colosseum complete with augmented reality battles. The next ‘@ the Movies’ promotion is Sneak Saturday on April 19th which will debut trailers and promo material shown at CinemaCon a few days before. Source:.
