The John Wick Universe continues its epic expansion with a new animated feature. During today’s Lionsgate studio showcase at CinemaCon 2025, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson announced a new John Wick animated film prequel that’s currently in the works. The new film will showcase the legendary hitman’s “Impossible Task” that’s often been mentioned but never shown in the previous films.

The John Wick franchise team at Thunder Road Pictures and 87Eleven Entertainment will co-produce the new animated film. Shannon Tindle ( Ultraman Rising ) will direct the feature from a script by Oscar nominee Vanessa Taylor. Reeves also reprises his iconic role and will voice John in the upcoming feature.

Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee are producing the film, with 87Eleven Entertainment’s Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves also attached to produce. 87Eleven Entertainment’s Alex Young and Jason Spitz will executive produce the animated prequel. Set before the events of the previous films, the animated film sees John Wick complete his Impossible Task, the killing of all of his rivals in one night to free himself from his obligation to the High Table and earn the right to be with the love of his life, Helen.

The animated prequel will feature highly stylized visuals and action much like the live-action features. It will be aimed at more mature audiences. Fogelson said on the announcement, “In both animation and the world of John Wick, the possibilities are endless.

And there is no John Wick story fans are clamoring for more than the Impossible Task. Shannon’s take on that story is an incredible one, and we are beyond excited to see what John Wick can do in animation.” Stahelski added via a press release, “I’ve always been fascinated with anime.

It has always been a huge influence on me, especially with the John Wick series. To have the opportunity to develop a John Wick anime seems to be the perfect progression for the John Wick world. I feel John Wick is the perfect property for this medium—anime holds the potential to expand our world, our characters, and our action in ways unimaginable before.

” Iwanyk and Lee also stated via press release, “Shannon has a breathtaking vision for a film we’ve all long wanted to make. Alongside Vanessa’s story, we’re hugely excited to bring it to audiences.” The John Wick animated prequel does not yet have a release date, but it’s expected to be released in theaters later on.

The first theatrical spinoff of the franchsie, Ballerina , starring Ana de Armas, hits theaters on June 6. Today’s presentation also confirmed that John Wick: Chapter 5 is in the works, with Keanu Reeves locked in to return as Wick, and Chad Stahelski back to direct the sequel..
