Cinema Paradisos

So many theaters, so many upgrades.

Dearest readers, it is Holy Week, and all I want to do is move into an art house cinema and stay there for the rest of my life. Think “Secret Mall Apartment” for a movie house.Anyway, last month when I was checking out all my local listings, I got this:Courtesy of Sarah Wright.

And this:Courtesy of Sarah Wright.Back in February, this nearly killed me:Photo by Sarah Wright. If you want to push Woman on the Verge right over the ledge, closing all the theaters will finish the job, no doubt.

But I am relieved to report Chatham Orpheum, Cape Cinema, and even the movie theater at the Cape Cod Mall are all back and online. What’s happening at the Mall is interesting. Previously a Regal Cinema, eight of the 12 movie theaters reopened at the end of March under new ownership.

Apparently, Regal renovated the picture and sound, and the new owner, Bill Hanney, is replacing all the seats like so, except in blue:Photo by Sarah Wright.Eventually, he also plans to open a live theater, cabaret theater, and comedy club in the same space. These blueprints are posted in the lobby, which I find fascinating.

I mean, if someone really wanted to figure out their “secret movie house apartment,” how hard could it be?Photo by Sarah Wright. The point is, movie theaters are always changing. Look no further than the big renovation happening at The Crandell Theatre.

Something similar is underway at Images Cinema, too.Movie theaters need our love and devotion, so please support them as often as you can. Better yet, become a member at your local cinema.

Let them know what you think they are doing well and suggest things you would like to see in the future. Because they depend on you.In closing, between Passover, Easter, and school vacation, I know you are busy.

So in case you are still wondering, here is my favorite line from the film I wrote about last week:When you do a PhD, you learn more and more about less and less until eventually you know everything about nothing. With an MBA you learn less and less about more and more until eventually you know nothing about everything. And she says, ‘I have an MBA and a Ph.

D. so I know everything about everything. You just have a Ph.

D.’So said my favorite cast member, Jeanne Sinquefield, in Errol Morris’s latest, “Tune Out the Noise,” to a new co-worker during his first week at Dimensional Fund Advisors. What makes this so hysterical to me is the fact that her co-worker, Gerard Reilly, has a BS in theoretical physics and an MS in high-performance computing, both from Trinity College Dublin.

Go figure. Happy Easter, Chag Pesach Sameach, and God bless Patriots’ Day, only in Massachusetts..
