The city of Varanasi has paid a breathtaking tribute to the acclaimed 2015 film Masaan. A massive, hyper-realistic mural featuring the film’s lead actors was recently revealed in Shastri Nagar in Sigra neighbourhood.

The artwork has drawn widespread admiration from both the public as well as the film’s cast. Actor-producer Richa Chadha , who starred in Masaan alongside Vicky Kaushal, shared her emotional response to the mural on Instagram. “I came across this a few days ago, and I want to thank the artist from the depth of my heart," she wrote.

“In these times of weekend box office collections and a severely shrinking film business, it reaffirms my faith in the power of cinema. Cinema is forever. Going to visit Banaras in May, please let it remain till then," she wrote in her post.

The mural was created through a collaboration led by Curves and Colors, with support from the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) and its Vice Chairman, Pulkit Garg. In a statement on social media, Curves and Colors wrote, “MASAAN – A Tribute to Varanasi Through Art. Our Hindi cinema has long mirrored society, capturing the pulse of time and place.

Art in public spaces, much like cinema, serves as a portal—transporting us to stories etched in memory. We’re proud to unveil our latest creation at Sigra Art District—a striking multi-storey mural inspired by the iconic film Masaan (2015)." “Rooted in Varanasi, both in spirit and setting, Masaan reflects the soul of this ancient city.

Our mural, with its evocative colours and textures, merges the film’s essence with the timeless aura of Varanasi—creating a visual symphony that speaks to the city’s heart," they added. Curves and Colors also thanked their collaborators and said the masterpiece wouldn’t have been possible without them. Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Masaan explores themes of life, death and longing along the ghats of Varanasi.

Released on 24 July 2015, it earned critical acclaim for its storytelling and performances by Vicky Kaushal, Richa Chadha, Sanjay Mishra, Shweta Tripathi, Pankaj Tripathi and Rohit Saraf. The film also received international recognition, including a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival..
