Ciara Kelly: Tempers frayed very quickly when someone banged on the boot of my car in anger, instead of just keeping calm to avoid danger

Twice this week, I’ve seen someone slam a hand on a motorist’s boot. The first boot was mine. I was at a traffic lights on Baggot Street in Dublin waiting to pull off when the loud double bang came from the rear of my car and made me jump out of my skin. It came from a cyclist who wasn’t happy I hadn’t moved instantly when the light had gone green.

I was at a traffic lights on Baggot Street in Dublin waiting to pull off when the loud double bang came from the rear of my car and made me jump out of my skin. It came from a cyclist who wasn’t happy I hadn’t moved instantly when the light had gone green. What he didn’t appear to see was I was in the middle lane of three with a bus to my left and a large pick-up truck to my right and even though I was at the top of my lane, I was stepped back from the line as I couldn’t fit my car in between the other two as they were so wide.

I’d to wait for both of them to move on in order to drive forward. He hit my boot again and this time shouted. Join the Irish Independent WhatsApp channel Stay up to date with all the latest news.
