Chris Simmie talks federal election campaign as NDP candidate for Regina–Qu'Appelle

Article content A former Regina city council candidate has thrown his hat into the ring as the NDP candidate for the Regina-Qu’Appelle in the upcoming federal election. Chris Simmie ran for Ward 10 in the municipal election last November and lost to Clark Bezo. Now he looks to win enough votes in northwest Regina and the surrounding area to represent residents at Parliament.

“A vote for me is a vote for a practical, accessible progressive voice — and a vote for the NDP is a vote for real results, like dental care for 3.4 million Canadians, diabetes medications for 3.7 million and contraceptive coverage for over 9 million,” Simmie said in an email to the Leader-Post.



He is set to run against Conservative incumbent Andrew Scheer, who has held the seat since 2004. Scheer won 62 per cent of the district’s votes in the 2021 election, with the NDP candidate following at 21 per cent. Other candidates include the Liberal Party of Canada’s Rahima Mian and Dionne Fehler from the People’s Party of Canada.

“The top concerns I’m hearing across Regina–Qu’Appelle are the rising cost of living, economic instability and access to health care. People are feeling squeezed and left behind while the same political games continue in Ottawa,” wrote Simmie. Simmie grew up in Regina and describes himself as a “hardworking, honest local with deep roots in this community.

” He runs a small media business in the city that focuses on photography, videography and drone work. He’s hoping to flip the riding to orange based on the NDP’s platform promises for health programs like dental and pharmacare and support for industry. Simmie says he will advocate for “major” cross-country infrastructure that bolsters international trade, clean energy and job creation and work to rebuild Saskatchewan’s relationship with Ottawa.
