Chris Davies believes new signing Lee Myung-jae has similar qualities to Alex Cochrane with the battle for the Birmingham City left-back spot set to heat up. Cochrane has been without competition for much of this season due to Lee Buchanan’s injury woes but Blues added Lee to their squad on deadline day. The South Korea international watched his new teammates defeat Stevenage 1-0 at the Lamex Stadium on Tuesday to advance to the Vertu Trophy semi-finals.

On Lee’s arrival, Davies commented: “We’ve been looking for a left-back and he came onto the radar, looking more closely at him he’s another experienced player, he’s 31, he’s been a one club man in South Korea and he’s won championships and titles, and been a captain so he brings leadership and experience. He plays for the national team. “He’s very accomplished in possession and has good quality on the ball.

He’s a similar profile of full-back in some ways to Alex in the way he plays. I think he’ll be a good support in that position for the rest of the season.” Blues completed three further deals on deadline day with Alfie Chang, Romelle Donovan and Ayumu Yokoyama all sealing loan moves away from St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.

Chang moved to League Two leaders Walsall, while Donovan joined Brentford and Yokoyama sealed a switch to Belgian side Genk. Davies said: “I would rather keep the squad together with the amount of games we’ve got but if players come to me with a desire to go out and play and really need to, then we look at that and see how we can help them. That’s what we’ve decided to do with those players.
