Kurnool: Former union minister Chinta Mohan has strongly criticised the recent Supreme Court ruling by a seven-member bench, describing it as a “defective judgment.” He condemned Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for establishing the Mishra Commission in response to this decision, demanding its immediate dissolution and warning of serious repercussions if the commission remains. Addressing the media in Kurnool on Saturday, Chinta Mohan questioned the silence of Chief Ministers from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to form a one-member commission, which he alleged was driven by selfish political motives.
He highlighted the congress party’s historic efforts under leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, and Ambedkar, which secured 15% reservation for SCs and 7.5% for STs. He credited Sonia Gandhi and Arjun Singh for the 27% reservation for OBCs in education and employment but lamented the lack of current support for SCs.
Chinta Mohan criticised the country’s banking sector, pointing out that while SCs and STs, who constitute 25% of the population, receive only 1% of loans, affluent groups benefit disproportionately. He demanded that banks allocate 10% of loans to SCs and 50% to OBCs. He further attacked the Modi government, alleging that loans amounting to Rs.
45,000 crore were waived for a single businessman and questioned how banks could consider extending an additional Rs. 10,000 crore for a power project for the same individual. Referring to Amaravati’s development, Chinta Mohan expressed doubts about the necessity of a Rs.
60,000 crore loan for its construction. He pointed out that Naidu had agreed to repay Rs. 11,000 crore borrowed from HUDCO at a 9% interest rate over 15 years, with quarterly instalments.
He criticised Naidu’s decision to seek loans from the World Bank, Germany, and HUDCO instead of demanding grant funds under the bifurcation act. He warned that Kurnool’s fate, which lost its status as the capital, could repeat if Tullur is developed as the capital city. He also criticised the shift from Hyderabad to Tullur and the YSR Congress’s announcement of three capitals.
Chinta Mohan demanded Rs. 10,000 crore for the development of Rayalaseema districts and accused corporates of targeting the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant for privatisation. He alleged that some BJP leaders were acting as intermediaries in this process and called on the Centre to declare unequivocally that the steel plant would not be privatised.
He held Chandrababu Naidu responsible for addressing this issue..
