Pune: A 47-year-old railway overbridge in Chinchwad was closed for vehicular movement last week after a small portion of its slab structure collapsed. A senior official from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) said the bridge was already closed for the movement of heavy vehicles, but from Friday last week, it has been closed for all kinds of vehicles. The railway overbridge connects Chinchwad Gaon with the old Pune-Mumbai highway.

A few years ago, the civic authorities built an overbridge parallel to the old one and both had one-way traffic movement. "We have now allowed two-way traffic movement on the new overbridge because of the closure of the old one," said Bapu Bangar, the deputy municipal commissioner of Pimpri Chinchwad traffic department. The municipal corporation in Dec, last year, decided to demolish the old overbridge and construct a new one after railway authorities, in a letter to the civic body, stated that it was unsafe for commuters.

However, the railway officials allowed PCMC to continue the movement of light vehicles until the demolition began. A senior PCMC official said work to prepare an estimate for the construction of the new overbridge and its drawings were underway. Once completed, the estimate and drawings would be sent to the railway authorities for their approval as per the procedure, the official said, adding that after which the tendering procedure could be initiated.
