China is set to transform its education sector by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching methods, school curricula, and textbooks across all levels of learning, according to a government white paper released on Wednesday. The move is part of the country’s broader push to enhance innovation and secure new engines of economic growth. The Chinese Ministry of Education stated that AI integration would not only modernise classrooms but also develop students’ and teachers’ core competencies—ranging from independent thinking and problem-solving to effective communication and collaboration.
“The use of AI will help cultivate the basic abilities of teachers and students, and boost the core competitiveness of innovative talents,” the ministry noted in a statement published on its website.China has already begun introducing AI-focused courses in universities and expanding enrolment in such programmes. The interest surged after local AI startup DeepSeek launched a competitive large-language model in January, touted as a cost-effective rival to its US counterparts.
This education overhaul aligns with China’s national “strong-education nation” strategy, which was announced earlier this year with a 2035 target. The initiative aims to drive efficiency and innovation within the country’s academic and technological sectors.Officials believe AI’s role in classrooms will create more dynamic, interactive, and challenging learning environments, preparing students to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.
