KUALA LUMPUR: Nasi kandar was the lunch of choice for a group of journalists from China covering President Xi Jinping's state visit. Some among them couldn't resist the opportunity to once again enjoy the dish — a comforting reminder of their time studying at a Malaysian university. Liang Liang, who goes by the Malay name Husna, said she and her colleagues took the chance to revisit the flavours of Malaysia before interviewing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya.

"We are media from China. We will be covering events in Putrajaya and chose to eat nasi kandar here, to take a piece of the memory back home to China," she said in a video on TikTok today. In the one-minute and 57-second clip, Husna and her four colleagues confidently placed their orders in fluent Malay.

Their plates were heaped high with a variety of dishes, and drenched in mixed curries.Among the items they selected were squid, rendang and fried chicken. To wash down their nasi kandar, some of them had sirap ais.

The meal was especially nostalgic for one journalist who had studied at Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2006."All of them — Chinese journalists — spoke Malay and ordered Malaysian food. "The group arrived in Putrajaya to interview the prime minister.

"Be careful while eating — don't stain your suit," joked Husna, who also teaches Malay at Yunnan Minzu University.© New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd.
