Chillmaster Faces Life Sentence Over Culpable Homicide After Fatal Hopely CrashAward-winning Zimbabwean musician Gift Kudakwashe Hombarume, better known as Chillmaster, could be facing life in prison following a tragic accident in Harare’s Hopely suburb that claimed the life of a pedestrian.The incident has sent shockwaves through the entertainment world, with unconfirmed reports suggesting that Chillmaster may not have had a valid driver’s licence at the time of the crash. Witnesses say the Horror hitmaker failed to produce a licence at the scene, raising suspicions that he may have been driving illegally.
While it’s still unclear whether he’s fully unlicensed or simply didn’t have the licence disc on hand, the absence of the document has opened him up to legal trouble. Under Zimbabwe’s Road Traffic Act [Chapter 13:11], driving without a valid licence carries a penalty of up to one year in prison, a fine of up to US$300, or both.But that may just be the beginning of his legal woes.
If prosecutors pursue a charge of culpable homicide and driving without a licence, Chillmaster could face a far more serious sentence. According to Section 49 of the Criminal Law Codification & Reform Act, culpable homicide can lead to life imprisonment, a hefty fine (currently up to US$5,000 or more), or both, depending on how the court interprets the facts of the case.In simple terms, culpable homicide covers situations where a person either fails to realise their actions could be deadly, or knowingly takes risks but doesn’t do enough to prevent harm.
