On Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 17, Violet can’t stop thinking about Carver, Stella and Kelly can’t stop thinking about a baby, and Pascal can’t stop thinking about Monica. There’s a whole lot of pent-up energy around her, but in a shocking twist of events, there was no drama. Is that a first for this show? (Peter Gordon/NBC)Chicago Fire usually takes advantage of all the angst, so it was quite refreshing to see things play out differently.

Outside of a quick dust-up during a motor vehicle accident call, Pascal has been dealing with Monica’s death as well as can be expected.Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 17 Relies on Emotional Arcs with Excellent Resultsby Carissa PavlicaChicago Med Season 10 Episode 17 Gave Steven Weber His Meatiest Material Yet As Archer Faced A Bizarre and Challenging Dayby Jack OriThe Rookie Season 7 Episode 12 Channels the Purge, Except with Chenford’s Situationshipby Jasmine BluWas it right for him to approach a woman in shock after causing the accident? No, but he recovered nicely without going too far.Novak, whose fling with Damon continues, is looking out for Pascal.

She’s got his back, and it’s nice. There have been hints that Novak has been through some pain in her past, and as she helps Pascal cope with his, maybe we’ll find out more about it. (Peter Gordon/NBC)She reminded Pascal that they handle things similarly, as frontrunners, pushing through the pain to the other side.

Pascal found her easy to confide in, telling her he’s reconsidering how quickly he returned to work. He needed to be there for his peace of mind, but he also needs to deal with his new reality. But how soon is too soon to get back into the swing of things after losing a spouse? The reality is that people with careers don’t get much of a break.

You’re expected to shake it off and get on with life. If only it were that easy. (Peter Gordon/NBC)When Pascal finally does attempt to clear Monica’s things, he reconsiders donating her perfume and a lovely dress.

He can’t forget her entirely, and that room looked near empty when he was done with it.Is there something wrong with holding on to your loved one just long enough to take you to the other side of the substantial loss? As someone who has items from childhood in my basement, I think it was way too soon for him to begin clearing out her things. Why Hasn’t NBC Renewed Brilliant Minds And The Irrational Yet?by Jack OriWhy Serena Benson’s Death On Law & Order: SVU Still Aggravates Me 23 Years Laterby Jack OriNo, Shifting Gears Is NOT A Cheap Knockoff of Tim Allen’s First Successful Comedyby Jack OriHe doesn’t need to wallow in misery, but he doesn’t need to block out his memories of the woman he loved, either.

I’m interested to see what Boden brings to the table on Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 18 (we have a two-week wait) because he had similar personal struggles when he was Chief. (Peter Gordon/NBC)They all work hard to keep their personal lives separate from their jobs, but when you have daily reminders, that’s easier said than done.Novak’s love of all things true crime (welcome to the club, baby!) ensured that, although Violet had been spending more time thinking about Carver than spending actual time with Flynn, Flynn made an appearance.

He’s such a good guy, and he offered Violet a place to land even after her worst day, but she didn’t take him up on it. At this point, I think he just needs to move on because it’s hard watching someone so nice fall so far behind her feelings for Carver. But I get where she’s coming from, too.

Carver hurt her. She’s trying to move on, but they have something special that can’t be overlooked. (Peter Gordon/NBC)I’m ready for him to return, but with Boden’s big episode coming up, it will probably be a while before we see any real connection between Violet and Carver.

Damon’s return was uneventful in terms of what we’re used to with Damon. He is working really hard, refusing to fumble his second chance. And while I’ve been kind of rough on Herrmann in his quest to be Chief, this was the first time where I really saw a benefit to his kind of management.

But he’s not comfortable yet. When he makes a mistake, his first notion is to apologize and offer to pay for it.

Herrmann keeps giving him advice along the way, but I had to wonder if saying offering to pay was a wussy move was helpful. It’s funny (and true), but I’m not sure Damon is ready for that just yet.Herrmann kept his eagle eyes on his new recruit, reminding him that this isn’t a one-off.

Sure, he’s receiving more training, and he always will, but this is his home now, and it’s OK if he puts down roots. (Peter Gordon/NBC)Does Herrmann have lucky kids or what? Firehouse 51 would be lucky to function under his command. There, I said it.

I’ve eaten my words.Kelly and Stella are finding the wait to become parents hard. They are so early in their journey, and I think the three months to a year could be much longer.

But then there’s Natalie, just the kind of girl I expected to appear when they first agreed to adopt. It’s such a TV trope to find the child you’re waiting for like a castaway on a beach. What are the odds that they’ll soon be parenting a 13-year-old girl whose life has already been in Stella’s hands? Hell, we don’t even know if her family is still around, but we know she’s hiding something, and she’s sought out Stella for a reason.

(Peter Gordon/NBC)She’s so young and acting so tough. She fights her instinct to experience joy with the inclination that she’s got to be cool and in control. Regardless of whether she becomes an official member of the family, I expect Stella will take her under her wing and teach her a few things anyway.

How can Stella and Kelly remain themselves with a baby? It would change the entire trajectory of the show.

But if they get a teenager who can go to school while they’re at work? Problem solved, and new problems arise. It’s the best of both worlds. What did you think about “A Beast Like This”? Vote in our poll and share your thoughts below.
