For as long as Anna Blamires and Makena Parthen have played volleyball, they've played together. The duo started playing club volleyball together as middle schoolers before going out for the Cheyenne Mountain team freshman year, and they've played on the same team ever since. After watching the seniors on signing day as freshmen, they made it a goal to be up on the stage themselves one day.

That day came on Wednesday. Four years as varsity starters and multiple state appearances later, the best friends sat side by side and signed to their chosen colleges, BYU for Blamires and College of Charleston for Parthen. Oh, and both of their college mascots are Cougars.

“It's a full-circle moment for us,” Blamires said, who always dreamed of attending BYU. “All we know is volleyball with each other and now we get to experience it on our own and have the potential to grow so much. We are so excited for each other and ourselves.

I think we will grow and succeed so much in college.” Added Parthen, “It feels like the end of an era. I’m sad we have to separate but I know she will do such big things.

She's my best friend in the entire world.” Blamires and Parthen will play Thursday as the Red-Tailed Hawks face Palmer Ridge, whom they lost to in the state semifinals last year. Both are "pumped" to face the Bears while soaking up every moment of their last state run.

“Our team is so ready for state,” said Blamires. “We have been looking forward to this all season, it's always a high for us. We know each other and know what each other needs to succeed.

We know how to win. As long as we are strong mentally we can win state.” Other signees from Cheyenne Mountain included Jessica Farmer, wrestling, Hastings College; Nate Glad, baseball, Northeastern Junior College; Ethan Longwill, lacrosse, William Jewell College; Jansen Roberts, baseball, Crowder College.
