AN INQUEST has been held into the death of a 40-year-old male who was discovered in a Wrexham property. Samuel James Povey from Chester was pronounced dead at a property in Wrexham on August 28. At County Hall in Ruthin on Wednesday (December 11), an inquest was held into his death.

Born and raised in Chester, Samuel, known to family and friends as 'Sam', studied business before fulfilling several jobs and financial roles, including owning his own business. Sadly, he suffered a long history of excessive drinking and the use of illicit medication alongside a gambling addiction. On July 12, Sam was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital following self-harm and alcohol withdrawals.

Despite being intoxicated, he was admitted but self-discharged the following day. A statement from PC Ankers confirmed police entered a property at Regent Street in Wrexham at approximately 1.45am on August 28, where the body of a male was discovered and later formerly identified to be Sam.

Consultant pathologist Dr Mark Atkinson concluded the cause of death to be multi-drug and alcohol toxicity. He found evidence of multiple drugs and the presence of significant levels of alcohol. None were found to be at a lethal level on their own, but combined proved fatal in this case.

Assistant coroner of North Wales East and Central David Lewis concluded his death was drug and alcohol related. Samuel had a long-standing history of substance abuse, despite his motivation to get better. He did not intend for his multiple addictions to end his life at the time, and engaged in support services throughout the final two months before his death.
