Cher thought about suicide in her marriage with Sonny Bono after being 'dizzy with loneliness'

Cher revealed how felt suicidal near the end of her marriage to Sonny Bono. The star opened up about the complexities of her life in a new memoir.

Cher gets candid about the dark days in her marriage with Sonny Bono. In her newly released memoir , Cher: The Memoir, Part One, the legendary singer opened about her tumultuous relationship with Sonny Bono. She spoke about how the two first met, becoming friends and roommates and then romantically involved, leading to a spontaneous marriage in an apartment bathroom.

Cher offered insight to the difficult parts of their marriage in the memoir that included Sonny cheating, him being controlling and emotionally abusive and the effects it had on her. At one point in Oct. 1972, it got so bad Cher became plagued with suicidal thoughts and and considered jumping off her Las Vegas hotel balcony.

"Sonny had given me the vehicle and the confidence to become the somebody my mother always told me I would be, and then he just lost interest." "I stepped barefoot onto the balcony of our suite and stared down," she continued.

"I was dizzy with loneliness. I saw how easy it would be to step over the edge and simply disappear. For a few crazy minutes I couldn't imagine any other option.

I did this five or six times, and each time I'd think about Chas, my mother, about my sister, about everybody and how things like this could make people who look up to me feel that it's a viable solution, and I would step back inside." Cher filed for divorce in 1974 after ten years of marriage and the couple finalized their divorce in 1975. They share son Chaz Bono, who was born in 1969.

Following the finalization of her divorce, Cher went on to marry rock musician Gregg Allman. The former couple welcomed son, Elijah Blue Allman, in 1976. Although Cher and Sonny, had their rough patches, they maintained a friendship until his death in 1998 due to injuries from a skiing accident.

At Sonny's funeral, Cher gave a eulogy per the request of his fourth wife and widow, Mary. Post their divorce, they went on to do a variety television program for two seasons from 1976-1977, titled The Sonny and Cher Show. The 78-year old artist even called the Laugh at Me performer her close friend that she often went to for guidance and support, throughout the memoir.
