Cher Lloyd reveals label told her to “get with” Justin Bieber to boost her career

Despite not winning, she landed a deal with Simon Cowell ’s SYCO Music in the UK and Epic Records in the US – both under Sony Music – and went on to release two studio albums: 2011’s ‘Sticks + Stones’ and 2014’s ‘Sorry I’m Late’.

In the latest episode of the We Need To Talk podcast , the singer-rapper opened up about her time signed to SYCO and Epic Records, revealing that she was advised to pursue a romance with Justin Bieber as a method to promote one of her albums. “I walked into the record label at the time and they hadn’t given me a promotional budget..



. We spent millions on this album, but there’s no budget to go get people to hear it?” Lloyd told host Paul Brunson. “I walked in and said, ‘Look, I really need some cash to push this record.

’ Basically, [I was] told no, but what I needed to do to make this record take-off was to hit the clubs, find out where Bieber is and I should go try and get with him.” Lloyd was a teenager and in a relationship with her now-husband Craig Monk at the time she was told to “go hook up with someone mega-famous and, basically, leech off the back of someone else’s fame.” The ‘Swagger Jagger’ star even said she was warned by her team to “not let the label know about it, because they will do anything to stop this marriage.

Earlier this month, she dropped ‘Head Down’ – her first single in four years. On the podcast, she’s looking forward to “reintroducing herself” to the UK audience. “It feels good – no one’s controlling the narrative.
