Read More Chennai gets its very first air-conditioned (AC) suburban train. Launched over the weekend, this modern train has already become a hit with daily commuters, especially during peak hours. Running between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu, the new AC train offers a much-needed escape from the rising temperatures.
Built by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, the train boasts several upgrades compared to regular local trains. These include: Automatic doors Passenger information system Sleek design with underfloor propulsion, giving passengers more space to move freely between coaches. According to NDTV, Madan, an IT worker who now prefers this train over his car, shared, “It’s a superb way to beat the heat.
I can work on my laptop comfortably without worrying about the traffic." While many commuters praised the train’s cool interiors, some pointed out a few downsides: No charging points for mobiles or laptops Cold metal seats, which could be uncomfortable for elderly or orthopaedic patients Another concern raised by commuters was the fare. Tickets range from Rs 35 to Rs 105, which some feel is more expensive than even the Chennai Metro.
At the moment, the AC suburban train makes just three trips a day. Government employee Amudha suggested adjusting the schedule: “The timings should match office hours so more of us can use it to get to work.".
